The Martian is another bestseller that has been made into a movie, similar to The Book Thief. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this book as I heard mixed reviews about the movie from various people. However, I haven’t seen the movie yet, but after reading the book, I feel fairly confident that the book is much, much more detailed than the movie (which probably makes it better…).
All that to say – I really enjoyed this book. Being an astronaut, chemistry, physics, and astronomy are extremely far from any area of expertise that I can claim; yet, this book was very fascinating. It was painstakingly researched and the math and science genius behind the writing is beyond compare. I will admit that some of the more complicated equations and chemistry that is done by the main character in his fight for survival was way over my head, although I had to appreciate the sheer brilliance of the writer.
A short summary of this book? An astronaut gets stranded on Mars when a freak accident leads his team to believe in his demise. He fights to survive, facing incredible obstacles in every situation while a rescue can be planned. Trying to rescue him isn’t a small feat — traveling in space takes a phenomenal amount of time and effort with absolutely no room for error.
Overall, I recommend this book — the main character is engaging and actually has a great sense of humor in his journal entries despite his situation. Fair warning – there is some strong language in this book so be prepared, but otherwise, a great read not only for the story but also for the informal education you will gain on space travel and the odds of survival outside of planet Earth.
