It’s Friday! Whohoo! Fridays are always fun – the completion of another week and the anticipation of the weekend to come! 🙂 Lately, our weekends have been filled once again with football (’tis the season! haha), organizing the house, relaxing, and going to church. With the weeks of rain apparently almost behind us – we are looking forward to enjoying some sunshine and this North Carolina fall.
Here are some of my favorites from the week – from both everyday life and from around the internet:
Life Lately
This apple cake!! Made this last Friday in anticipation for a rainy weekend, and it was a sweet treat to enjoy by the fire while watching football. I used this recipe for the cake (To make gluten free, I just subbed GF flour. I also added an extra teaspoon of cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon of allspice…so moist and so flavorful!)…and this brown butter glaze recipe for the icing (this MAKES the cake – it’s awesome!! It also is a great “dip” for apple slices… 🙂 ).
Backyard beauty (we are not in Texas anymore!) — loving seeing these flowers outside my window and feeling the crisp air of a Carolina fall. Looking forward to the leaves continuing their amazing color show as well as enjoying the sunshine that we have been missing for what seems like forever!!
Winston Salem Symphony – my husband and I went to the symphony all the time in Dallas since season tickets were my birthday present while we were dating. When we moved to NC this year, he decided to help make it feel a little more familiar and gave me season tickets to our new symphony here in Winston-Salem. We’ve been twice now – this week was all Mozart with the spotlight musician being an oboist. It’s a great atmosphere with very high quality performances – we are so enjoying it!
I bought these shoes in black this week – I’m so indecisive when it comes to shoes and clothes — so half my shoes are just worn out because I just can’t decide on which ones to get to replace them! I loved these though as I felt they were classy, elegant with the button, and the heel was not ridiculously high. (The style is also called “Jessica” so I think it was meant to be… 🙂 )
Articles I Enjoyed this Week:
Good viewpoint on the controversy surrounding gluten-free Cheerios (although I think it was published before the latest news of contamination with some of their products)
This article made me tear up — and I texted it to one of my best friends to ask if we could start a similar organization in the USA. Since I’ve worked with terminally ill patients – I think this is an absolutely incredible idea to bring joy to their last days.
I enjoyed this research about the simple ways to feel happier. I especially liked their research on how holding hands with someone you love can help you and your brain process painful situations better – fascinating!
Sarah Bessey writes absolutely beautifully, vividly, with a style that draws me in every time. Her article exploring our habit of “sanitizing” the stories we tell was a needed reminder for me that in our vulnerability there is freedom, healing, and great peace.
Lastly, this article from Relevant had similarities to my post on Wednesday about the common thought process that we need to change the world or do something “big” to matter. I loved the Relevant author’s statement: “One of the greatest lies that we’ve been lead to believe is that our lives are only worth something if we produce things that other people value. That is incorrect.”

Hope everyone has a wonderful, relaxing weekend! What are your plans? Favorite moment this week?
