Although I usually try to read a variety of book genres, I do get caught up in my favorite “go-to” book types too often. It sounds odd, but I’ve never been very interested in whether a book is a bestseller or if it was once in the top ten books in the nation. However, since I discovered (thanks to my sister) the blog Modern Mrs. Darcy this year, I am trying to diversify my book selections and read some of her recommendations.
That being said, this was a book that seemed to repeatedly come up in both her blog and in others’ recommendations – the premise seemed intriguing – so I decided to check it out.
My findings? The imagery and vivid descriptive phrasing in this book are like no other I have ever read. I greatly enjoyed it as it made me feel I was as fully engaged in the plot and setting as the characters themselves. This is an emotional read that kept me guessing in its exact resolution. Not exactly your happily ever after ending; however, it is realistic, empathy inducing, and thoughtfully resolved. The author also weaves in quite a bit of history on lighthouses and their keepers which I found fascinating.
I recommend this book for the stunning writing alone along with the intriguing story about how much emotional distress in unique circumstances can justify desperate, and oftentimes, devastating choices.
